About
Solör Bioenergy leads the transition toward a more sustainable energy system by retrofitting existing biomass boilers to produce biochar—combining district heating with long-term carbon storage. By upgrading established infrastructure, Solör unlocks new opportunities for both climate impact and business resilience. The company’s vision is to build a climate-positive society where heat production not only warms communities but also stores carbon for thousands of years. Through this integration of renewable energy and carbon removal, Solör creates environmental and societal benefits that extend well beyond the local heat network and into future generations.
Overview
Solör Bioenergy set out to prove that district heating could do more than provide warmth—it could store carbon. Starting with a single facility, the company pioneered a simple yet powerful innovation: adjusting boiler airflow to produce certified biochar alongside renewable heat. After the initial success, Solör retrofitted more of its heating plants, demonstrating that the approach works in practice. With over 270 potential sites across Sweden and Norway, Solör now stands ready to scale a fast, practical path toward climate-positive energy.
"The biochar we produce is primarily used as a soil amendment. It has excellent properties for the soil – retaining water and reducing the need for fertilizers. We develop products for topsoil and sell them to construction and land development companies.”
Erik Öhlund, entrepreneur

Highlight
- Solör produces renewable heat and electricity while generating certified biochar that stores carbon, supporting climate mitigation, urban green spaces, and sustainable city development.
- The project generates renewable energy while producing biochar and long term carbon sequestration. Over the first five years, it is expected to create approximately 8,400 tons CO₂eq in certified carbon sinks. Applied in urban soils and landscaping, the biochar improves soil structure, enhances water retention, and supports local biodiversity, contributing to a circular and climate-resilient urban environment.
- Solör Bioenergy strengthens local energy resilience by providing renewable heat and electricity to communities across Sweden and Norway. Biochar application in urban areas improves green spaces, enhances soil health, and supports sustainable construction practices. With a large network of existing facilities, the project has enormous potential to scale carbon sequestration rapidly. It demonstrates how energy production, long-term carbon storage, and local environmental improvements can be combined at a regional level, inspiring similar initiatives across the Nordic region.

- European Biochar Certificate (EBC) – Certifies sustainable biochar production, ensuring verified feedstock, controlled processing, and environmental compliance according to strict European standards. Global Biochar C-Sink Standard: Certifies scientifically verified, long-term carbon storage in biochar through full lifecycle tracking and accounting of emissions, ensuring transparent and persistent carbon sink integrity.
Vision
Biokolprodukter Global, established in 2019, is a Swedish company that partners with projects to help them improve their existing bioenergy facilities to simultaneously produce biochar. They specialise in the development and sale of biochar products aimed at enhancing soil quality and combating climate change. Their offerings include pure biochar, nutrient-enriched biochar blends, and machinery for biochar production.
At Biokolprodukter, they believe biochar can drive both climate action and sustainable local growth. Their mission is to make certified Swedish carbon credits a tool that strengthens biochar production and use—turning climate goals into real carbon removal and soil improvement. By linking local producers with climate-conscious buyers, they create a self-reinforcing cycle of climate and environmental benefits.
