Carbon Removal Project

Biokolprodukter - Krageholm Drifts

The project produces high-quality biochar and renewable heat from sustainably sourced residues from its own forest. The biochar serves as a long-term carbon sink in the soil, and the heat is recovered and used for grain drying and heating farm buildings, supporting the replacement of fossil fuels.

About the project

Krageholm Drifts runs a small pyrolysis plant at a farm estate near Ystad in southern Sweden, converting the estate's own sustainably managed forestry residues (branches and tops, FSC/PEFC certified) into biochar while recovering the process heat for grain drying and building heating.

Before the installation of the biochar plant, heat demand for grain drying and building heating at Krageholm was met by an aging woodchip boiler supplemented by an oil boiler. This setup resulted in continued fossil CO₂ emissions and did not generate any long-term carbon sinks.

Sold mainly as a soil amendment, the biochar helps the ground hold onto water and nutrients, so that fields stay healthy and productive for longer. The recovered heat replaces a former oil boiler, closing a tight local loop from own-forest feedstock to on-farm energy to finished product.

"The fun thing is that it gives something back to the climate and to our own fields."

Certified under the Global Biochar C-Sink Standard, the project shows how a working farm can turn its own waste streams into a source of durable carbon removal.

Company story

Biokolprodukter Global, established in 2019, is a Swedish company that partners with projects to help them improve their existing bioenergy facilities to simultaneously produce biochar. They specialise in the development and sale of biochar products aimed at enhancing soil quality and combating climate change. Their offerings include pure biochar, nutrient-enriched biochar blends, and machinery for biochar production.

At Biokolprodukter, they believe biochar can drive both climate action and sustainable local growth. Their mission is to make certified Swedish carbon credits a tool that strengthens biochar production and use; turning climate goals into real carbon removal and soil improvement. By linking local producers with climate-conscious buyers, they create a self-reinforcing cycle of climate and environmental benefits.
