About project

The Vichada Climate Reforestation Project has evolved from a timber initiative into a pioneering conservation program spanning over 106,000 hectares. It restores degraded lands, enhances carbon sequestration, and safeguards biodiversity while creating stable, long-term employment in one of the country’s most isolated regions. Through large-scale reforestation, protection of native vegetation, and sustainable land management, the project mitigates greenhouse gases, strengthens rural economies, and supports Colombia’s broader climate and development goals.

Benefits of Project & Method

  • Mature Gold Standard–certified project with FSC-aligned practices, operating under a 50-year plan to transition plantations into native-species forests through assisted natural regeneration.
  • Shifting from timber production to conservation, over 21,428 hectares of degraded land has been reforested with trees enhancing ecosystem health and carbon sequestration capabilities.
  • Committing to its conservation efforts, it has mapped high conservation value areas and monitors 110 species that are either threatened or protected using camrea trap and participatory monitoring.
  • Created 381 new employment opportunities and has a gender equity program to promote access to equal opportunities with regards to training and development.
  • Apart from delivering recurring workshops, the project also builds a fire-brigade networks at village/municipal level.

  • Ongoing Free, Prior and Informed Consent processes with seven Indigenous reserves, plus support for cultural, organisational and food-security initiatives.
  • The risk to the carbon is mitigated through the issuance of ex-post credits, meaning the carbon is already removed and verified.
  • Pre-issuance, 20% of the carbon is pooled into a buffer to mitigate against the risk of reversal.
  • Robust soil analysis and monitoring plans have been carried out to manage soil quality.
