Carbon Removal Project

Fruedal Energy

Based out of Denmark, Fruedal Energy converts local organic waste into high-quality biochar which is spread in neoghbouring farms to improve crop health and growth. As a additional benefit to the process, the project also supplies energy to the surrounding homes.

About project

Through its circular process, the project produces high-quality biochar from local waste wood biomass such as tree trimmings and agricultural wastes from its surrounding farms. The biochar produced is spread in neighouring farms land which not only stores carbon, but also improves the soil health and nutrient retention, benefitting food production and plant health.

The project uses Carbo-FORCE technology which is one of the leading systems in the world and has won the prestigious VR Sponsorship Award.

About supplier

Fruedal Energy is a Danish project developer within energy and the environment.

Benefits of project and method

  • Fruedal Energy transforms local organic waste into high-quality biochar which when spread in fields boosts soil health and enhances crop productivity.
  • Adding to its circularity, the process also produces 10,000 MWh of thermal energy per year which is recycled into the project to minimise energy demands. Any surplus energy is sent to Ramsing-Lem-Lihme Kraftvarmeværk, a district heating plant which supplies energy to the surrounding homes.
  • The project issues ex-post credits, which mean that the carbon has already been removed and verified. These credits gurantee that the carbon will be stored for hundreds of years.
  • The project impacts and traceability of carbon credits have been certified by Carbon Standards International and audited by CERES.
  • By partnering with Cula Technologies, the project has a robust dMRV system that traces and monitors every batch produced and records the GPS coordinates of its final storage location.
  • Skive Municipality has assessed their operations, emission controls, wastewater, and proximity to protected sites.
  • Has partnered with reliable logistic providers to optimise storage and routing strategies.
