About project

EthioTrees is a community-led ecosystem restoration project established in 2016. For many years, the area was subjected to severe land degradation. The project will focus on reversing this land degradation through planting native trees, creating grazing exclosures, improving water management, and supporting sustainable livelihoods like frankincense and honey production, all while capturing and storing carbon in the soil and the trees.

About supplier

Climate Lab is a social enterprise and climate organisation focused on advancing high-impact carbon removals and community-based climate solutions. They partner with vunerable rural communities, especially smallholder farmers, to restore ecosystems, build resilient livelihoods, and generate credible, science-backed carbon removals.

Benefits of Project & Method

  • Offers Plan Vivo certified ex-post credits, meaning the carbon has already been removed and verified.
  • Guarantees the permanence of the forest for at least 50 years by implementing a post-project monitoring plan.
  • Restores degraded bushland ecosystems which have lead to an increase in the number of species and diversity of mammals and birds.
  • Employs rigorous analyses, the project has measured impacts for soil quality, carbon storage, and biodiversity improvement which have been verified by Mutucertification International before issuance.
  • Despite the high geopolitical risk in the area, the project has a proven track record of continuing operations. They have effectively managed previous conflicts by providing food aid, investing in socio-ecological activities, and installing independent satellite communications to ensure continuous communication.
