Carbon Removal Project

Carboneers - Ghana Mid Tech Solutions

Carboneers works with smallholder farmers in Ghana, to convert agricultural residues into biochar which can be used to improve soil fertility and generate additional income. In 2025, Carboneers upgraded their artisanal biochar production by adopting “Earth Kilns” to improve the production emission tracking and provide more worker safety during the production process.

About project

Carboneers have upgraded their artisanal biochar production by adopting “Earth Kilns” developed by High Plains Biochar. This enhanced technology improves worker safety, reduces methane emissions, and enables more accurate emissions tracking. It ensures stable and consistent production while preserving key co-benefits for agricultural systems and maintaining a strong focus on equality and women’s empowerment.

About supplier

Carboneers develops distributed biochar projects at scale in the Global South, where biomass is more abundantly available and often goes to waste. By training farmer communities to convert their own agricultural waste biomass to biochar, socio-economic value is created where it's needed most . Biochar is a stable carbon sink, locking away CO₂ for hundreds of years with which carbon credits are created. The vision of Carboneers is to remove carbon at scale, while providing farmers with more economic stability and enhancing their soil fertility: contributing to a more food-secure, climate-resilient world.

"Biochar is a simple but powerful tool — it sequesters carbon, improves soils, and gives smallholder farmers a reliable second income. Specifically in Ghana we've managed to have the first third-party digital payment system in whole biochar industry."

Benefits of project and method

  • Offers ex-post credit, representing carbon that has already been removed and verified.
  • The project converts cacao pod husks, which would otherwise have been burnt, into a biochar, safely storing the carbon for hundreds of years.
  • The improved technology will provide more accurate in operational data (eg: production emissions, pyrolysis temperature), ensuring the project has a positive impact with high integrity.
  • Carboneers utilises a comprehensive and robust monitoring system with weekly app updates, GPS-verified photos, and rotating supervisors to ensure transparency and accountability.
  • The "Earth Kilns" improves worker safety by reducing their exposure to open flames.
  • The projects reduces gender inequality in the area enabling them to become artisans, supervisors, managers, and gives them control over their own income.
  • Local partnerships: Beyond Carbon and NGOs like MEDA are crucial for project implementation and working with the farming communities across the region.
