Biokolprodukter - Cortus Energy

Cortus operates a renewable gas and biochar facility in Sweden, using advanced pyrolysis and gasification technology. The system converts locally sourced forest residues into renewable energy gases and stable biochar. The renewable gas replaces fossil fuels in industrial processes, such as the steel industy, while the biochar provides long-term carbon storage and is used as a soil amendment.

By combining clean energy production with carbon sequestration, the project demonstrates how circular bio-economy solutions can decarbonize heavy industry while creating verifiable carbon sinks.

Biokolprodukter Global, established in 2019, is a Swedish company that partners with projects to help them improve their existing bioenergy facilities to simultaneously produce biochar. They specialise in the development and sale of biochar products aimed at enhancing soil quality and combating climate change. Their offerings include pure biochar, nutrient-enriched biochar blends, and machinery for biochar production.

At Biokolprodukter, they believe biochar can drive both climate action and sustainable local growth. Their mission is to make certified Swedish carbon credits a tool that strengthens biochar production and use—turning climate goals into real carbon removal and soil improvement. By linking local producers with climate-conscious buyers, they create a self-reinforcing cycle of climate and environmental benefits.

• The biochar is stored in soils, which is permanently stored for 100+ years.
• Waste residues from the forestry and agricultural industry such as wood chips are used to produce the biochar.
• Used to improve soil, biochar enhances plant health by strengthening soil structure and boosting its overall quality.
• Cortus’ WoodRoll technology produces about 500+ MWh of electricity and 2700+ MWh of thermal energy that is used internally and supplied to the district.
• Cortus contributes to the circular economy by utilising waste materials to sequester carbon.
• The project’s MRV system uses Carbonfuture’s dMRV+ that helps track and trace the carbon sequestration and final storage sites.

• The project integrates gasification and biochar production in a circular process. It replaces fossil fuels, supports a greener steel industry, and stores carbon in soil, providing both clean energy and long-term carbon sequestration.
• The project converts local biomass residues into renewable gas and stable biochar, preventing CO₂ emissions and reducing reliance on fossil fuels. By replacing fossil energy in industry and transportation, it supports large-scale decarbonization while enhancing urban green spaces and improving stormwater management practices.
• The project has been contributing to innovative solutions and job creation by processing local biomass residues. It's been supporting local industries with renewable energy and strengthened Sweden’s transition toward self-sufficiency in clean fuels. The biochar, applied in urban soils, improves soil health, ecosystem services and promotes circular resource use. The project aims to inspire similar industrial biochar-energy initiatives across the Nordics.
