Carbon Removal Project

Biokolprodukter - Godegården

The project aims to increase long-term carbon sequestration through biochar production, improve soil quality in agriculture, expand biochar use in Swedish farming as animal feed/bedding and urban applications, and integrate circular regenerative farming practices with local heat production.

About project

Godegården, a regenerative farm in Järpås, Sweden, has been producing biochar since 2024. Beyond carbon removal, the farm is built around closed-loop resource use by turning its own residues into heat and long-term carbon storage.

The farm operates a biochar production unit that converts wood shavings from a local sawmill, along with seed husks and rejected seeds from its own grain operations, into biochar and renewable heat. Using pyrolysis technology previously reserved for simple combustion, the facility turns material once burned for heat alone into certified, long-term carbon sinks. The resulting biochar is used both on Godegården's own land and sold to other Swedish farms and urban applications along the southern part of Sweden, improving soil water retention, nutrient storage, and pH balance.

Certified under the Global Biochar C-Sink Standard, the project shows how a working farm can turn its own waste streams into a source of durable carbon removal.

"The healthier the soil, the healthier the crops. Biochar supports soil life, happy animals, and clean air and water - showing that regenerative farming and biochar benefits everyone"

About supplier

Biokolprodukter Global, established in 2019, is a Swedish company that partners with projects to help them improve their existing bioenergy facilities to simultaneously produce biochar. They specialise in the development and sale of biochar products aimed at enhancing soil quality and combating climate change. Their offerings include pure biochar, nutrient-enriched biochar blends, and machinery for biochar production.

At Biokolprodukter, they believe biochar can drive both climate action and sustainable local growth. Their mission is to make certified Swedish carbon credits a tool that strengthens biochar production and use; turning climate goals into real carbon removal and soil improvement. By linking local producers with climate-conscious buyers, they create a self-reinforcing cycle of climate and environmental benefits.

Benefits of project and method

  • Keeps the farm's own waste streams working on-site rather than being disposed of or combusted.
  • Supplies biochar not just to Godegården's own land but to other Swedish farms and urban green spaces, spreading the soil benefits beyond the farm gate.
  • Supports local heating needs through the district heat network fed by the pyrolysis process.
  • Unlike composting or direct land application of residues, biochar production locks carbon away while still delivering the soil-improvement benefits associated with organic amendments.
  • Delivers verified, long-term carbon removal under the Global Biochar C-Sink Standard.
