Carbon Removal Project

Biochar Life - WasteX

Biochar Life aims to both mitigate climate change and reduce poverty by training smallholder farmers in Thailand on biochar production and usage. Participating farmers turn their crop residues, waste that would otherwise be burned, into biochar that they can use on their own fields or sell to others for profit. The by-product gases from biochar creation are used to produce thermal energy and electricity, enhancing the circularity of the project. Data is collected throughout the process to ensure accurate carbon removal and is done according to Global Artisan C-Sink standards.

About supplier

Biochar Life’s mission is to support the environmental and wellness needs of the general public via the removal of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. They aim to improve the lives of rural communities and uplift the underrepresented by scaling carbon removal. They are committed to gender and income equality by employing fair and equal hiring practices for marginalised communities.

Benefits of Project & Method

  • Permanence of 100+ years.
  • Biochar improves soil fertility on degraded farmland, boosting both drought resilience and crop yield.
  • Biochar Life’s considers gender and income equality as primary social aims achievable through the project's creation of new income streams in rural communities.
  • Their model is geared to uplift under-resourced and marginalised populations by providing them with sustainable income, social empowerment, and a healthier environment. On average, 75% of the revenue from carbon credit sales provides additional income for farmers and helps alleviate poverty.
  • Biochar Life improve farmers’ access to credit by providing economic stability, financial education, and support services.
  • The reduction of open field burning reduces particulate matter emissions, which improves air quality and community health.
  • Unique to the WasteX’s technology, a byproduct of biochar production called syngas is recycled in the system to provide thermal energy for the pyrolysis process. This adds to the circularity of the system and increases energy efficiency of the process.
  • The residual thermal energy from production is converted into electricity, enabling small-scale biochar producers to generate their own power. This decentralises the energy system, reducing reliance on external grids and enhancing resilience to energy disruptions and climate-related challenges.
  • Biochar Life has a robust monitoring and data reporting practice that collects data points throughout the process. They use an internal data maintenance system on top of the Global Artisan C-Sink standard’s requirements that maintains operational integrity.
